Important Note From the Regnum Christi

Life-After-RC has the text of a letter from RC members to Fr. Alvaro Corcuera concerning the future of their movement.

In part, the letter reads

"We have always admired the Legionaries of Christ in their ability to see the good in things and speak positively of others. It is an admirable quality that is so lacking in most of our society, and sadly within the Church. However, this emphasis on the positive can become a double edged sword when exaggerated or misdirected. Indeed, it can be detrimental to the process of enacting the necessary reforms our organizations need. This ab ility to filter out and avoid negative news blinds you from perceiving the errors and flaws visible to us and voiced by some members of the Church hierarchy.

Our fear is that you and most of the Legionary major superiors continue to languish in a state of denial over the flaws and errors that have been introduced into the internal culture of the Legion by the decades long influence of Fr. Maciel and his deviant personality. You must face things squarely and get past this denial."

The authors claim that the RC is theirs, that they have built it up and that it does not belong to the superiors of the Legion of Christ. Any comments from experts in Spiritual Theology?

Exlcblogger Told You He Was a Con Man

Told ya so...

“It seems to me and many others that this was a man with an entrepreneurial genius who, by systematic deception and duplicity, used our faith to manipulate others for his own selfish ends,” Archbishop O’Brien [of Baltimore] told The Catholic Review in a telephone interview following his Feb. 20 Rome meeting with Father Alvaro Corcuera, director general of the Legion.

Liar Liar

It has come to Exlcblogger's attention that certain Legionaries of Christ are saying that Fr. Alvaro Corcuera is going around apologizing personally to the victims of Maciel's sexual abuse. Exlcblogger has contacted several of the victims. They have been in communication with each other as well as with many of the other victims, and not a single one can report any contact with the Legion, let alone with Fr. Alvaro. So this reports gets a pants on fire rating.

There Surely Were Those Who Knew

From the UK Telegraph:

Fortunately, not all Legionary priests are in denial. Yesterday, we learned the following from Spero News:
Following the recognition of the misdeeds of Legionaries of Christ Founder Fr. Marcial Maciel, Fr. Thomas Berg, LC, has written a letter to Regnum Christi members acknowledging their the feelings of confusion and betrayal and lamenting the "disastrous response" to the crisis provided by the Legionaries’ leadership. He also apologized directly to Maciel’s victims, appealed for help in reforming the Legion and demanded an independent third party investigation to discover any Legionaries who may have been "accomplices" to Fr. Maciel’s misconduct.

Fr Berg is absolutely right. And perhaps now the time has come for Pope Benedict - who acted wisely in the case of Fr Maciel at a time when Cardinal Sodano and other curial prelates were lauding him - to make a statement on the subject. The lifting of the SSPX excommunications was justifiable, though very badly handled. A cover-up by a powerful and wealthy new movement of a long history of sexual abuse by a potential "saint" is a very different matter. If there were "accomplices", as a senior Legionary priest implies, who were they?

Corcera asks "forgiveness for all this suffering"?????

From a letter sent by Fr. Alvaro Corcuera to members of the Regnum Christi:

“It is also true that he was a man, and these things that have hurt and surprised us -- and I don’t believe we can explain with our reason alone -- have already been judged by God. It is true that we are going through much suffering and a great deal of pain. As in a family, these pains draw us together and lead us to suffer and rejoice as one body. This circumstance we are living invites us to look at everything with much faith, humility and charity. Thus we place it in the hands of God, who teaches us the way of infinite mercy.”
“For my part, I ask forgiveness for all this suffering,” Fr. Corcuera continued. “And I beg God with all my being to help us all to see it from the heart of Christ.”

Now what the heck is that supposed to mean? Forgiveness for the suffering the LC and RC are going through? What about everyone else; the Church, the victims, the "mistress" and daughter, ex-members? What suffering exactly? Does this petition mean he feels complicit in what caused the suffering?

Exlcblogger is honestly perplexed.

Could they bungle this any worse?

What are they saying?

I wonder what this audience was all about. The last time Fr. Corcuera had an audience, he was told of the Vatican orders to annul the private vows. What might it be this time? For the Legion's description of the event, click here. From the Legion's website.
