Vatican Statement on Apostolic Visitation of Legionaries of Christ
(01 May 10 – RV) Below we publish a Vatican Radio translation of the Press Office Statement released Saturday May 1, at the conclusion of a two day meeting in the Vatican on the outcome of the Apostolic Visitation of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ:
1. On the days April 30 and May 1, the Cardinal Secretary of State chaired a meeting in the Vatican with five bishops in charge of the Apostolic Visitation of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ (Bishop Ricardo Blazquez, archbishop of Valladolid, Msgr. Charles J. Chaput OFM Cap., Archbishop of Denver, Mgr. Andrella Ricardo Ezzati SDB, Archbishop of Concepción, Mgr. Giuseppe Versaldi, Bishop of Alexandria; Mgr. Ricardo Watty Urquidi, M.Sp.S., Bishop of Tepic). It was attended by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and the Substitute for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State.
One of the sessions took place in the presence of the Holy Father, to whom the Visitors presented a summary of their report, which had been previously submitted.
During the visitation over 1,000 Legionnaires were met in person and hundreds of written documents were examined. The Visitors have visited almost all the religious houses and many of the works of the apostolate directed by the Congregation. They heard, orally or in writing, the opinion of many diocesan bishops of the countries where the congregation operates. The Visitors also met several members of the "Regnum Christi" Movement, although it was not the subject of the visit, especially men and women religious. They have also received considerable correspondence from laity and family members of the Movement.
The five Visitors testified to a sincere reception and a constructive spirit of cooperation shown them by the congregation and individual religious. While acting independently, they have reached a widely convergent evaluation and a shared opinion. They testified that to having met a large number of honest and talented religious individuals, many of them young, who seek Christ with genuine zeal and offer their entire lives to spread the Kingdom of God
2. The Apostolic Visitation was able to ascertain that the behaviour of Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado has caused serious consequences in the life and structure of the Legion, so much so, to require a journey of profound re-evaluation.
The serious and objectively immoral behaviour of Fr. Maciel, supported by incontrovertible evidence, at times constitutes real crimes, and manifests a life devoid of scruples and of genuine religious feeling. The large majority of Legionaries were unaware of that life, particularly because of the system of relations created by Fr. Maciel, who had skilfully managed to build up an alibi, to gain the trust, confidence and surrounding silence and strengthen his role as a charismatic founder.
Not infrequently the lamentable disgracing and expulsion of those who doubted his upright conduct, and the misconception of not wanting to harm the good that the Legion was doing, had created around him a defence mechanism which made him untouchable for a long time , thus rendering knowledge of his real life difficult.
3. The sincere zeal of the majority of the Legionaries - which also emerged from the Visitation of the congregation houses and their many works, and which is appreciated by many - led many in the past to believe that the charges, which gradually became more insistent and widespread, could only be slander.
Therefore the discovery and knowledge of the truth about the founder resulted in surprise, dismay and deep sorrow among members of the Legion, as clearly evidenced by the Visitors.
4. From the results of the Apostolic Visitation it has emerged clearly, among other elements:
a) the need to redefine the charism of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ, preserving the core truth, that of "Militia Christi", which characterizes the apostolic and missionary action of the Church and which is not identifiable with efficacy at any cost;
b) the need to review the exercise of authority, which must be conjoined to the truth, in respect of conscience and to develop in light of the Gospel as an authentic ecclesial service;
c) the need to preserve young people's enthusiasm of faith, the missionary zeal, the apostolic dynamism, through appropriate formation. Indeed, disappointment about the founder could call into question the core of this vocation and charism that belongs and is specific to the Legionaries of Christ.
5. The Holy Father would like to assure all Legionnaires and members of the "Regnum Christi" Movement that they will not be left alone: the Church has a strong desire to accompany them and help them in the path of purification that awaits them. It will also mean sincere confrontation with all those who, inside and outside the Legion, were victims of sexual abuse and of the power system devised by the founder. It is to them, at this time, that the thoughts and prayers of the Holy Father go, along with his gratitude to the many who, even in the midst of great hardships, had the courage and perseverance to demand the truth.
6. The Holy Father, in thanking the Visitors for the delicate work which they competently carried out with generosity and deep pastoral sensitivity, assured them that he will soon indicate the modalities of this process of accompaniment, starting with the appointment of a Delegate and a Study Commission on the Constitution.
The Holy Father will send a Visitor to the Regnum Christi Movement, in response to insistent requests from consecrated members thereof.
7. Finally, to all Legionaries of Christ, their families, committed lay people in the Regnum Christi movement, the Holy Father renewes his encouragement during this difficult time for the Congregation and each one of them. He urges them not to lose sight that their vocation, which originated from Christ’s call and is animated by the ideal to witness his love to the world, is a true gift from God, a treasure for the Church, the indestructible foundation on which to build their personal future and that of the Legion.

I suspected you'd be back as of today.
Some relief, and some hope, at long last!
Dear Landon, I just want to say 'thank you so much' for having had the courage, strength, and stamina for fighting for the truth, and for so long. Many, many people are deeply indebted to you. God bless you always.
Thanks be to God and B16. Our prayers to the apostolic envoy, the commission, and the apstolic visitor to Regnum Christi. They will need it.
Laus Deo!
And thanks for your blog.
Thanks ExLC for having the courage to fight for truth and taking so many hits for it.
For years, your blog has been a great source of information, humor, and healing. Thank you.
Edmond Ritter - if you are still around - what do you think?
Hey EXLC Blogger-
Thanks for your work and giving so many of us a forum to vent, share, heal and laugh. I hope B16 decision brings new life to the Legion that I once loved. It gave me the first sense of hope in a very long time.
Good luck to all the victims of an evil MM and a twisted culture of deception and manipulation.
It will be really interesting when Bishop X knocks on the door at 677 Via Aurelia, Papal Bull in hand, and says I'm the new General Director. Will Alvaro, Garza and Sada obey and submit or will they turn tail and flee? We'll soon see.
Thanks blogger. I promise to curse less.
-9 years of lies
Landon,
Thank you so much for your courage in keeping up the good fight all these years. Your blog was very helpful to me over the past year, as I tried to figure out what all of this really meant to the LC and to our family (we had a son in one of the apostolic schools). It's because of the courage of people like yourself that the truth has finally been outed, and I was so relieved to see the Pope acknowledge that courage and perseverance in the Communique.
9 Years, your honesty and rawness of feeling have always impressed me. And I must admit your salty language (yeah, that's a bit euphemistic) has made me laugh out loud on occasion. I have read many of your posts out loud to my husband (never in front of the children, I might add LOL).
God bless all of you who have been through this exhausting and oftentimes excruciatingly painful journey. My sincere gratitude to the many who have helped make sense of this situation over the past year.
I will miss this blog, Landon!
"The Holy Father would like to assure all Legionnaires and members of the "Regnum Christi" Movement that they will not be left alone: the Church has a strong desire to accompany them and help them"
Why is the pope kissing their ass? Oh, that's right, there's million$, no - BILLION$ of rea$on$.
Anonymous, take your pills on time & get a little sleep. And go vomit elsewhere.
Today I preached a homily quoting the Vatican Radio announcement. It was a relief for me and many of those congregated to hear the long awaited rectification.
Those irreversibly bitter about the LCs may yet hope that this is the beginning of the end for the God-forsaken Legionaries, and it may be. Nothing guarantees that a spirituality will come out of nowhere to substitute for what we have masquerading as one. But I think that it is rather the end of the beginning of the birthpangs constituting the reputed "foundation" of the Legion under the beast, Maciel. Now the real foundation starts in earnest.
My own interpretation of the text, and the holes in it, is that the "nomenklatura" will over the next year be removed from the exercise of any authority in the congregation. And Donny Clancy, "permanent rector" of section B at the College in Rome may perhaps be sent to a psychiatric hospital, or simply put into a vat of formaldehyde so that the "spirituality" that he exhales can be neutralized without causing harm to anyone else. He will kill no more souls.
Laus Deo!

No. I will speak the truth everywhere I go.
Oh, I am so happy to see you posting again, exlc. You have really been a hero throughout all of this sordid MM/LC/RC business. Thankyou for everything and may our Good God reward you!!!
Landon
Thanks for what you ahve done. If possible keep this blog going, even if not at full blast until the dust settles. Thanks to 9 years also.

- What, are you nuts? The Legion is done, the evil revealed for all to know...even the blind should be able to see it now. To be blunt, I have read many of your posts and you make very little sense...you seem to be delusional at times with references to things that are often of no relevance to the topic at hand. So why bother? If you think the Legion will continue and that it was ONLY an MM problem, then you are in fact delusional and very mistaken. Certainly MANY LC's were part of the problem of the structure of the Legion. Golly, I can think of a few off the top of my head....Bannon, Kearns, even Morris, others... Your ego my friend is blinding you. The Church will be just fine without the Legion...in fact, it will be healthier and better off. The Legion stole vocations and the vibrant people from the parishes causing grave harm. The Pope will now proceed to reincorporate these innocent people back into the parish structure where they belong and can truly contribute to the Church and parish life.

"Those irreversibly bitter about the LCs may yet hope that this is the beginning of the end for the God-forsaken Legionaries"
ER,
Poor choice of words. How about "those irreversibly damaged"? Your use of the word bitter suggests you still buy into that Legion mentality that those hurt by the Legion and who consequently want it to be shut down (a perfectly legitimate desire, especially as we all now know it is an evil power system devised by a criminal, a system that fostered such "zeal" in its members that they were rendered blind to their founder's depravities and deaf to the cries of the abused) are embittered enemies to be reviled.
ER, I wish you nothing but peace and healing, no matter what ends up happening to the Maciel cult.
Dear "Irreversibly bitter":
I did not mean to touch you the wrong way. As for me, I am perfectly willing to leave to God and time to determine how the destruction or reconstruction of the Legion will play out.
You felt youself alluded to? Actually I was thinking of a telephone conversation with Fr Alvaro Corcuera, in which he told me that I had been diagnosed with an "irreversible psychological pathology". It was a horrible moment in my life. Much later, when I told the Visitator, Bishop Giuseppe Versaldi about this, he looked quite surprised. He is not only a canon lawyer, but founded a psychological clinic, and is a trained clinician. He knows that "irreversible pathologies" don't exist, and that I was being subjected to an abuse of psychology as a way of neutralizing me and getting rid of me: standard operation procedure in dealing with the troublesome among us.
By "irreversibly bitter", I thought I was referring to the superior-abusers who had serious personal commitments to the old system. It did not occur to me that someone outside might think I was referring to them. I see that even 9-years above seems quite happy with the results so far -- mind you, this is only the beginning of what the Pope is going to do. We don't know that the LC will not eventually prove inoperative, and dissolve on its own. From a human perspective, that is the most reasonable opinion.
So it leaves me wondering why you could be so bent on the LCs destruction NOW, not in a month or a year, but NOW. That's quite a lot of hate.
I, too, have been object of a lot of hate by the community in Rome. The superiors by a cultivated and nursed deception led many to think that I was a psychopath, inculcating hatred against me. You know that in our "spirituality", I had no way to defend myself without committing "indiscretions" (telling my true spiritual state to LCs who were not superiors) and committing the sin of "criticism" of superiors. I was alone in my secret of being framed as a psychopath. The abuse I was being subjected to was neatly covered over by this double taboo. John Paul Lennon wrote me a kind note saying that all of us who were forced out were subject to similar trials.
I, subject to all this hate, do not have a tenth of the bitterness you have. I dread to think what they may have done to you.
I pray you can learn to distinguish between the system and the men in the Congregation. The system will be destroyed. The men will survive it. Another question is whether the Congregation will still exist afterward, and in what form. I can be happy even if it does not die, but prospers. Can't you?
May God heal you too.
ER
ER, you have suffered much in the Legion. What I cannot comprehend, is why would you stay in an abusive relationship? God does not call us to be abused. We may suffer abuse and then we are called to expose the crimes and make the decision not to enable. Every day that you stay inside the legion, you enable it. You give it strength by remaining with the organization. When will Legionaries stand up for justice and walk away because it is the right thing to do?
THE_Br._Dan- I feel your pain. Lord knows I do. (And I thank gratefulmother above for her kind words). That's why i am curious to see what those higher-ups, what those elite few who had all the power in their hands will do. Bannon, Kearns, De Andres, Balleres, Guerra, Matteos, Esquivel, Clancy the man from hell, Garcia, and above all the big 3 Corcuera, Garza and Sada. Will they obey a NEW General Director who is not one of the team, not a member of the club?
I'm cycnical- and I don't see many of them sticking around. I cannot imagine Luis Garza being a "nobody". I cannot imagine Sada being "just" a professor in Ajusco. These men lust for power and control- and they have run the show for the past 20 years. Look at the food they eat, the movies they watch, the special hikes and teams for fubito and personalized schedules... they are NOT going to just get in line with 3000 other sheep and write a note asking for a toothbrush. It's much harder to go to coach when you are accustomed to first class.
I'm happy with the decision by the Pope but don't think the deal is done. I think this delegate needs to crack a few skulls. If the leadership remains, if this is all smoke in mirrors, then my wrath will be kindled anew.
Now I have to work on not hating- because I do hate those men. They tortured me mentally and spiritually and emotionally. You want proof God exists? I am still alive and so are they. Because nothing but God could have stopped me from hurting them. Hopefully God will help me to stop hating them. Especially Garza and Clancy and Corcuera who I knew all too well and who I hate all too much.
Baby steps, right? Look I went this whole post without any curse words! Fuckin awesome right!!
-And Landon- I second the motion. Don't quit on us. Maybe not daily updates, you've got a right to your own free time (unlike free time in the legion which was spent in the kitch or some bullshit team committment.. fuck I hated that. Remember seeing 5 minutes of tiempo libre en la varianda? 5 minutes. Enough time to pick my nose). But maybe weekly? or less? Don't go...
-9 years of lies
ER,
I was never personally hurt by anybody in the Legion, but I did have a son in one of the schools at one time and feel the outrage only a mother can feel when she realizes she has been fool enough to entrust the safety of her child to an order of priests founded on deceit and abuse of authority, conscience, and religious life in general.
My son, thankfully, seems relatively undamaged compared to so many others, at least for now. I do see tendencies in him to think it's okay to lie if brings about some "good" and to manipulate people in general. I can only hope that gentle correction on these matters will one day be effective.
What I really wanted to point out is that "bitter" has a negative connotation in English. I personally feel that anybody who has ever been harmed by this order of priests has every right to want to see it shut down. They have a right to that opinion and should not be labeled "embittered" for doing so.
I know you have suffered great harm at the hands of this cult. I pray for your healing and wellbeing, ER. I feel the outrage of a mother every time I read posts from people such as yourself, because it could very well have been MY son one day. I am angry, VERY angry, that this evil has festered within our Church under the guise of a legitimate religious order. This does not mean I hate anything but the evil. I do not hate any of the LCs. I think I can honestly say I don't even hate the likes of Maciel, although the very sight of his face brings me nothing but a feeling of loathing and revulsion. Still, I recognize he is a child of God, too, and I try my hardest to pray for him.
To me, hate means wishing eternal damnation and suffering upon somebody. I don't hate people. But I DO hate evil, and I hate when people have been hurt by evil.
God bless, ER.
Edmond Ritter - It appears you are too close to the Legion situation to really a proper evaluation of the matter. I don't know what you have done to step back, but if you haven't yet you should take a sabbatical away from the Legion. Best wishes.
- THE_Br._Dan
I had a conversation with one of the LC Priests that is on the way out (waiting on paperwork). He said that in the US, everyone listened to the Sunday talk from Fr Scott Reilly. Fr Scott told the communities to "not wimp out" and go to a diocese. The thread about an abusive relationship is spot-on. They are trying to control the communities by fear. I know that one's paradigm is different when you are not in the grasp of the abuser, but I do not get how the brothers do not see through this bull ****. It is tantamount to being JR's trailer park bitch that gets beat down and abused. Every time the girl wants to get away, "trailer trash" comes back with "you will be nothing without me." So she stays. This is not a relationship built on love but on control. At least "trailer trash" does not do it in the name of God. Brothers don't be the Legion's bitch. Life is far better on the outside.
I never realized there were so many preeminent priests within the LC that could speak of such things concerning the dismantling of the Legion despite the POPE having issued an order for reform.
Perhaps the next puff of white smoke should be for the lot of you, except that you have yet to learn that anything worth having is worth fighting for, and nothing changes unless someone is there to change it.
Be gone the naysayers for there is man's work ahead and not for the faint at heart.
Please stay on your blog Landon.
9 years perhaps you could comment over at G's place. Your comments are pity and down to earth.
POPE having issued an order for reform....
-PROFOUND REVISION OF CONSTITUTIONS
-REDEFINITION OF CHARISM
-FOUNDER DECLARED CRIMINAL, WITHOUT SCRUPLED AND DEVOID OF RELIGIOUS SENTIMENT
-CORRUPT STRUCTURE OF POWER
Reform means a return to one's original spirit... where is that for the LC's
-a collective charism requires valid sources that permit a plan of apostolic action and spirituality. LCs have none, EVERYTHING HAS BEEN DECLARED
INVALID....
-Without a valid patrimony you have no choice but to see it is the Pope that has already dismantled you... This is not a remodeling, this is building on rubble.
Main Entry: 1re·form
Pronunciation: \ri-ˈfȯrm\
Function: verb
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French refurmer, from Latin reformare, from re- + formare to form, from forma form
Date: 14th century
transitive verb 1 a : to put or change into an improved form or condition b : to amend or improve by change of form or removal of faults or abuses
2 : to put an end to (an evil) by enforcing or introducing a better method or course of action
3 : to induce or cause to abandon evil ways
No guts, no glory. Naysayer(s) please stay home.
Anonymous,
"Reform" could also be poorly translated and mean that they should re-form the order.
What better "reformers" than those who comment on these pages, having been fully immersed in the taint of one such as MM, et al. You know from your exposure the methodology employed for manipulation and deception and chose "flight over fight" which in and of itself is a noble feat of self preservation, but......the day is upon you ALL to come forward and fix what you know to be wrong. AND YOU DO KNOW!!!
You have a voice, and those too meek, please use your pen in place of your tongue, since you cannot fix your house by burning it down and damned be those who placed it in ill repair.
"No guts, no glory" is nothing but a worthless sound bite.
It takes guts to leave, to walk into the unknown, to read the writing on the wall, to face facts, to truly trust in God, to realize you have been horribly fooled, to cut your losses and salvage your life, to stand your ground in the face of dysfunction and deception....
George Wiegel should have the last word. He is spot on in his piece in First Things.
"No guts, no glory" is nothing but a worthless sound bite.
Agree...and it is another LC guilt trip. so much for freedom and love. What is this about? Saving an institution that Maciel even said would be attacked after he died?
What is God's will? I know it is not to lie, decieve and put guilt trips on people. If the people of LC/RC truly want to serve the Lord and the Church - they should not need to work so humanly hard on saving an institution set up by a fraud but should be fine taking their gifts to their parish and continuing to evanglize our Lord.
It is almost like if LC/RC were to fizzle - you would think that everyone goes home and stops serving the Lord. That means you were only building LC/RC and not the Church.
How many of the LC's are of a mind set conducive with your own ? Ponder that for a moment, since without some type of institutionalized reform, and if the LC is disbanded, they will continue on, individually and unabated, amongst you. Scary, huh.
The Church has experience in this area and will need all the resources it can muster (possibly including you) to reform it.
ER,
Do you have any knowledge of Fr. Timothy Mulcahey? He went to Rome last summer to become of the section leaders at the seminary.
Yes, I believe he replaced Jonathan Morris who went to NY. That means Fr Timothy is or was standing in as Vice Rector of section B, Jonathan's old position under Clancy. But this is old news, and I've been out of Rome since November. ER
Fr.Timothy Mulcahey is wound up tightly in the Legion. Fact.

Fr. Thomas Maher confounded many who knew him: how did this guileless, unaffected man ever make in through the Legion?
I'm having a bad week with my young adult child who lost faith thanks to this scandalous LC/RC group. I am the rotten parent who entrusted my child to them. I get to live with that for the rest of my life.
Maybe someone can cheer me up by telling me there are newly departed LCs? Oh, how I'd love to know more men are breaking free! Good news, PLEASE.
Anonymous, I'm a parent who (to my great grief) entrusted her children to this scandalous outfit, too.
Have you checked out http://leavinglc.blogspot.com/ ?
I noticed another priest has posted in the comboxes there that he is on his way out, too. So there are two more!
God bless.
Is Father Shawn Aaron LC still in Atlanta area or back in Calif.? Am shocked and disappointed he hasn't left the Legion yet.
Fr Aaron is getting ready for his new role, in charge of the Fund Raising Office of the LC. Advancing the Kingdom through his talent for gathering $$$$$$$.
I have to say that many of you people here are applying one or more instances to the entire legion. There are many many good priests in the legion, hundreds of which I know personally. I served as a coworker with them and I saw nothing but love and joy radiating from them. I would ask all of you on this site to reflect on the fact that the Catholic Church as a whole has gone through many rough spots, the Inquisition, the Galileo debacle, the conquest of the New World. In all of these instances, a few men twisted the reins of power, guiding a Holy and righteous Catholic Church into depravity and scandal.
Please, dont judge the entire legion on the character of a handful of men. Most legionaries are dedicated, humble men of God. They want nothing other than to lead others to Christ. I urge all of you reading this to pray just a little and let go of the anger you have because that anger is not righteous. We are all upset at the awful things Fr Maciel did, but we should pity him and pray that the rest of the Legion uses this tremendous shock to refocus and direct itself back to concordance with the Pope and with Christs vision for our Church.
I don't want to argue with everyone I would just ask that you read and reflect on what I have written.
God Bles,
Nick D.
P.S. By the way, I'm a college student at UGA and not some weirdo, I KNOW what I'm talking about.
Nick,
I'm not accusing you of being a weirdo, and I'm certainly not going to try to argue with you, but please understand that many of us here have many, many years of being around Legionaries behind us and long ago moved from the bedazzled stage to the understanding that even the LCs we know and love---those dedicated men you speak so highly of---show signs of very serious malformation, the result of being spiritually formed by the brainchild of a sociopathic criminal devoid of any religious sentiment whatsoever.
I am upset because I care. And because my own children have been damaged by the malformation of the LCs.
God bless.
PLEASE, PLEASE... are we going to shut up NOW?
Dear Anonymous,
you are welcome to shut up now. some of us would love to shut up now. However, some of us still bleed from our wounds, and we cannot but continue to cry out from the pain. Maybe you have no wounds. maybe you inflicted the wounds on others. Maybe you're one of those lc/rc folks who can serenely place all the pain and scandal into a large box and label it "Maciel's mess", all the while chortling, "it's got nothing to do with me, my experience has been good". If so, bully for you and your cult.
Please, Landon, make us laugh a last time. VDP's letter deserves something.
Landon
I hope you are doing well this advent season. I hope you can offer an occasional comment in the year to come. !Feliz navidad!
HISTORICAL FACTS BY FAITH BY STEVE FINNELL
Why do I believe that the Bible is God's truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? Why? Because of the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ! Why do I believe in the resurrection? Why? Because it is a historical fact, recorded in the Bible. There are no living eye witnesses to the resurrection; I except the historical record in the Bible, by faith.
CAN HISTORICAL RECORDS BE TRUSTED?
Most men accept that Hannibal was born in 247 B.C. and was considered the greatest military tactician and strategist in European history. Why do men believe this? There are no living eye witnesses, so the historical record is accepted, by faith.
George Washington was the first president of the United States of America 1788-1797. Men accept this as fact, by faith, because of the historical record. There are no eye witnesses who are still alive.
1 Corinthians 15:3-8 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8 and at last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.
I believe the Bible to be God's record for mankind. I believe it because of the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. I accept this as accurate historical facts, by faith.
THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS FROM THE GRAVE PUTS HIM IN A CLASS BY HIMSELF!
MEN ACCEPT SECULAR HISTORICAL FACT, BY FAITH.
WHY DO MEN NOT ACCEPT GOD'S BIBLICAL HISTORICAL FACTS, BY FAITH?
