Fr. Maciel defenders: Stop the Denial, Stop the Delusions!

Maine priest assigned to prayer and penance

July 17, 2008

PORTLAND, Maine—A Maine priest accused of sexual abuse dating back to 1959 has been assigned a life of prayer and penance by the Vatican.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland said Thursday that 70-year-old Marcel Robitaille's restrictions include no public celebrations of the Eucharist or administration of the sacraments.

He also can't wear clerical garb or present himself publicly as a priest, he must obtain approval from the bishop for travel beyond his daily routine, and he must make daily holy hour and monthly day of recollection.

Robitaille was first accused in 1989 by members of his family.

Robitaille was ordained in 1964, but has had no public ministry since 2002.
